Dating of Menachem Mendel Schneerson Photos

On the subject of Menachem Mendel Schneerson and his Beard.

Occasionally, I rethink a post but do not want to revise it. I want to amend the dating of various Rebbe’s photos.

This is how the real picture looks, without retouching.

The fold in the middle of the photo might mean that he was carrying it in a pocket, or a wallet, folded before it was applied to the passport. So could be the photo earlier than 27, but this is only speculation. Looking at the fold, he might have been carrying this photo in a pocket for years. Destroying such forensic details is unhelpful to understanding the photo history. In 1927, the Rebbe would have been 25. But if I had to guess, he is younger than 25 in the photo.

The passport photo was mislabeled 1923 online. Mouth was touched up. That’s why it never looked natural. Still squished, the proportions are slightly off. Too much contrast in the touched up version. The propaganda machine expects people to be stupid, and to a large extent, they really are.

I know Berre Gourary said this is not Ramash. This photo in mislabeled in Rebbe Drive 1929. Which would be after the wedding. When in fact it might be 1927 or earlier. This is the photo long before the wedding. Perhaps Leningrad. The Rebbe actually appears similar but older, compared to the passport photo. Overall, the Rebbe is thinner and younger here. This is how Ramash looked in Russia. It would also explain why Bere Gourary didn’t remember the Rebbe looking that way. He was just a baby.

But again the ugly drawn “yarmulke”. People who do this sort of vandalism are not human. This photo is in Riga apartment. Now compare the photos. More gray in the beard of Rayatz. Where Rayatz looks younger? This was before and after the arrest ordeal.

If you compare the holding hands photo, and the photos in Riga, Rayaz looks not just visibly older but like a different person after the arrest. It is not just the beard. That’s why I think the holding hands photo is in Leningrad, before the arrest. Rayaz was a different man then, just look at the pictures.

This photo classified as by Rebbe Drive as “unknown”. Look at the distinct modernist lamp, wall paper, it’s the same Riga apartment. Rayatz is holding the cigarette with same мундштук. He is still wearing the small, barely visible yarmulke. As a matter of fact, there are many Riga photos with Yarmulke too small for comfort or entirely drawn in.

Like the one above, where “artistic intervention” was required. Idiots.

The apartment was on Krišjāņa Barona Street, House No. 2. . One can do further research in Riga (see Letter of Chana Gourary to Nacha Rivkin).

But is this really Riga, perhaps the apartment in Warsaw?

This photo from the same tea party in Leningrad? That’s why Nechoma Dena looked so worried. She was thinking of Musya and was anxious.

Student at Friedrich Wilhelm University (now Humboldt of Berlin) in 1928. The Rebbe looks more mature here and not as thin as those “Russian photos”. 1928? We do not know for sure. It might be anytime up to 1933?

Purkersdorf c. 1936. Ramash came from Berlin Paris to the resort in Austria. This is the only photo we can date with certainty because we know when the Rebbe was in Purkersdorf.

Passport photo. 1939? Before coming to America?
