Comment on The Active and Passive Messianic Belief deserves a formal answer:
Broadly, there are two types of change.
Change Knowledge — Addition
This change knowledge I call an addition. This is additive knowledge. General science is gained by adding information, various innovations and inventions that are due to additional understanding of physics of the universe (even misnagdic learning of the text the way hasidius understood it). Mastering a skill would also be additive knowledge.
Change Knowledge — Subtraction
There is change knowledge that subtracts, not adds. In general, you start with some moral understanding, rules of life. But life experience, even spiritual insight, causes you to subtract, it leads to change your position or understanding. This is the change knowledge that really counts in your understanding of who you are and your happiness. Often, you gain this knowledge through hard life lessons. It changes you as a person.
Messianic Promise, the Change of the Progressives
Messianic change is not the promise of a better light bulb or washing machine, but the promise of a radically better world.
Why do I call this type of change “bad”? Because despite all the inventions and progress in science, in the realm of human relations, nothing changes. Humans crave this substantial change, and this is the only change that really counts. But it’s a deadly trap. Because despite all the external “changes”, there has been no change in human circumstances. Where it counts, nothing changes. The promises of this change have always led to disaster. If there is something worth blaming the Jews for, blame them for this idea. It set the stage for deadly religious wars and the tragedies of utopian communism and fascism.
Humans Crave this “bad” change
Humans have always observed that something is not right with this world. “Bad” world is even built into the foundational story of Bereishis. Instead of accepting this grim, eternal reality, humans created the promise of a better tomorrow. It is not an accident that Kabbalah preached Tikun (fixing up), and naturally, the progressives picked up the catchy virus and spread it as their flagship idea. It’s a vile lie and a deadly dream. Where it counts, nothing changes. Accept this; there is no CHANGE!
This idea of a "better world" was added throughout the generations. If you look at the Gemmorah it says 4 times "There will be nothing different to the world at the time of Mashiach, but that the Jews will return to its land and we wont be under the control of others (vassel state).
How did all this other stuff enter our lexicon and beleif? - as we suffered living in other nations, this idea of the whole world is going to be our slaves, the heaven will open up and our Bais ha'mikdosh will fall down. These things were very kind to the ear and had a positive effect on the hope of our people. Right or wrong it was a comforting blanket we could snuggle into.
